At 11 AM the festivities begin including musical entertainment, a free barbecue lunch, and visits from our local fire and police departments. Join us for afternoon games such as “Hoops” or “Batter’s Up” or enter the bubblegum blowing contest or watermelon eating contest to show off your talents. And don’t forget to stick around for the musical stylings of local favorite Michael John.

Frontier Days run all weekend July 1st-4th, check back to see the schedule as we get closer to the holiday weekend and don’t forget to catch the fireworks display July 4th at 10 PM.

The Fireworks Display in Bend

Finally, see the best fireworks display in the area at Bend’s 4th Of July Fireworks Spectacular. Fireworks start at 10 PM and are launched from Pilot Butte State Park. They can be viewed almost anywhere in Bend so long as it’s within view of Pilot Butte. Grab a picnic blanket and a picnic dinner, and lay out under the stars at one of Bend’s many parks or recreation areas.

2017 Solar Eclipse | Everything You Need to Know

While the buzz about the 2017 solar eclipse continues to grow in Central Oregon, hotels and campsites in the area have been booked for several years. The epicenter of the total solar eclipse happening on August 21, 2017, is Madras, a quaint little town located 60 miles north of Sunriver.

This event is unprecedented—the last coast-to-coast solar eclipse occurred in 1918, long before our vast network of freeways and automobiles existed. Authorities are projecting that tens, or maybe even hundreds of thousands of people, will flock to cities like Bend, Sunriver, Redmond, and Madras to view the eclipse.

How Can I Prepare for the 2017 Solar Eclipse?

For locals and tourists planning to view the eclipse, two Boy Scout mottos come to mind—be prepared and leave no trace. If you are staying in Sunriver or Bend, and plan to travel to Madras on the 21st, authorities are predicting Highway 97 will be at a standstill. Central Oregon authorities have also ramped up their eclipse preparations like they would for a natural disaster.

Pro tips for locals:

  • Sunriver locals need to be prepared for anything; stock up on groceries several days in advance and give a few days buffer around August 21st for things like errands and doctor’s appointments.
  • Be sure to fill up gas tanks in all of your vehicles 5-7 days before the eclipse because, in some towns, authorities are expecting long lines. In a worst case scenario, there will be gas and grocery shortages. Be sure to spread the word and talk to your neighbors about how they are preparing, too.
  • Tips for tourists:
Get your groceries as soon as you arrive. The Sunriver Country Store is located in the Village at Sunriver, and the Sunriver Marketplace is located at 18160 Cottonwood Road.
  • Keep your gas tank as full as possible. In Sunriver, there are only two gas stations in Sunriver: Crossroad Shell gas station is located at 56896 Venture Ln and a Shell gas station is located at the 18160 Cottonwood Road at the Sunriver Marketplace. You’ll have more options for gas traveling 20-minutes north or south on Highway 97 to Bend or La Pine, which has more gas stations and grocery stores.

Eye Safety During a Total Solar Eclipse

We were all taught as young children that it is never safe to look at the sun directly. However, what about during an eclipse—it will be dark after all, right? According to NASA’s website, “When watching a partial eclipse, you must wear solar-safe glasses at all time if you want to face the sun.” Scientists go on to explain that there are several phases, before totality, or the moment when it is safe to briefly remove your eclipse glasses and look directly at the sun. For a more detailed explanation visit NASA’s site.

Sunriver locals and tourists can pick up a three-pack of 2017 solar eclipse glasses at the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver for $5.00 while supplies last.

View The Great American Eclipse in Sunriver, Oregon

The total solar eclipse is a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to learn more about our solar system, the sun, and the moon. Especially young children and scientists, as there won’t be another total eclipse of the sun until 2024.

There is a 68-mile-wide shadow path that not only passes through Oregon but eleven other states as well. Madras may be the line of totality. However, there will be spectacular views of the partial eclipse in places like Bend, La Pine, and Sunriver. Since we already know traffic will be a nightmare, there are several places offering Sunriver bike rentals in the Village at Sunriver. Village Bike and Ski offers a large, new complete bicycle fleet and tourists renting through Village Properties enjoy a 10% discount at Village Bike & Ski Shop and several other retail stores and restaurants.

Fly Fishing 101 | Catch the Big One in Central Oregon

There are abundant opportunities for fly fishing in Central Oregon, whether you’re vacationing to the area or you’re living here year round. According to Game & Fish magazine, the key to catching the blue ribbon trout you’ve always dreamt about starts with knowing the 3 W’s—what they eat, when they eat, and where to find them.

Anglers travel from near and far to fly fish on the Deschutes in Sunriver, one of the nation’s top fly fishing destinations. The Upper Deschutes originates in the Cascade Mountains and offers a large ribbon of cold, clean water that is home to a wide variety of fish, including rainbow trout, brown trout, bass, and steelhead.

Sunriver and Surrounding Areas offer Miles of Rivers, Bountiful Lakes, and Gorgeous Views

Anglers looking for an ideal home base while visiting Central Oregon can look to the resort community of Sunriver. Offering miles of grassy banks, plentiful riffles, and gorgeous Cascade Mountain vistas, the rivers and lakes in the Sunriver area are not to be missed. There are hundreds of miles of rivers and over 30 lakes located within 45-minutes from Sunriver. Additionally, the well-known Paulina Lake and Wickiup Reservoir provide great trout fishing throughout the season.

Local Favorites – Deschutes River and Fall River

The Deschutes is over 250-miles long, which can sound overwhelming for those fishing for a weekend. However, top fly fishing destinations are located on both the Upper and Middle Deschutes River, making them easy-to-access from Sunriver.

Fall River is another favorite for Central Oregon natives. The river is around 10 miles long and flows through a pine forest, eventually emptying into the Deschutes between Sunriver and La Pine. The scenic area showcases gentle, rolling hills as well as volcanic cinder buttes. The Fall River is home to rainbow, brook, and brown trout.

To find out where the fish are biting and to get some insider’s knowledge, locals and tourists can turn to the Cascade Guides & Outfitters located in Sunriver. The fishing guide service is operated out of the Hook Fly Shop and offers extensive licensing allowing them to fish on more waters than other nearby fishing guide services.

Mt. Bachelor Bike Park Opens

Central Oregon is the perfect destination year-round for people seeking an outdoor getaway in the high desert. Mountain bikers and avid road cyclists alike stay in Sunriver due to its proximity to the Mt. Bachelor bike park to enjoy scenic bike rides on the resort community’s 35 miles of paved paths.

Although the region is home to passionate skiers and snowboarders, locals are praying for snowmelt by the time June rolls around. Sunriver is located 180 miles southeast of Portland with an altitude of 4,164 feet. Since the snow melts at lower elevations early in the year, outdoor adventurers can hike and bike as early as March.

With an elevation of 9,065 feet at the summit and record-breaking snowfall on the mountain this year, organizers at Mt. Bachelor bike park are optimistic about the downhill mountain bike park season in 2017. Bike park passes and tickets are already on sale and give pass holders unlimited access to the park all summer long.

Ride and Photograph the Deschutes River Trail

Outside the mountain bike park, cross-country and enduro riders will find plenty of options to keep their hands glued to the handlebars on the single-track trail networks that wind through the Deschutes National Forest. A local favorite for all skill levels is the Deschutes River Trail (DRT).

The DRT extends 15 miles between Sunriver and Bend and runs along the Deschutes River. Riders will pass through Benham and Dillon Falls and Big Eddy rapids. Riders will want to bring a camera in addition to plenty of water and power bars for the ride, as the DRT is one of the most beautiful mountain bike trails in the Sunriver and Bend area.

Mt. Bachelor Bike Park Offers Excitement for the Whole Family

If you are planning to bring children on your next summer vacation in Sunriver, the Sunshine Family Bike Park located at Mt. Bachelor gives young riders access to a loop to ride laps while parents watch from the West Village Deck. The park also offers a skills training area so that riders can build and strengthen their downhills skills before hitting the trails.

The mountain bike park at Mt. Bachelor also offers steep, rough terrain to challenge older downhill riders in training for the Gravity Race Series. Only in its second season, Mt. Bachelor’s Gravity Race Series takes place over the course of one day, beginning at 3:30 PM on August 5th.
