New Exhibit Opens @ High Desert Museum
Apr 27 – May 31 all-day

“An original exhibit exploring the power of water in the High Desert opens at the High Desert Museum on Saturday, April 27.  Desert Reflections: Water Shapes the West weaves together science, history, art and contemporary issues to explore the role of water in the region’s past, present and future.

Much like water permeates and sculpts every corner of the landscape, the art of Desert Reflections will extend from the Spirit of the West Gallery throughout the Museum’s interior and exterior spaces. Presentations from multiple artists will create an immersive experience, from visual art alongside the Museum’s stream to large-scale art pieces inside the Museum.

Half Day Kayaking, Paddleboarding or Canoeing Tour @ Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe

Paddling among lava flows stretching to Paulina Peak in Newberry Crater National Monument, Aspen groves, tranquil lagoons and side channels.  Tumalo Creek’s Half-Day Deschutes River Tour is the perfect mini-adventure for visitors who want to fit in another activity in the afternoon. The Half-Day Deschutes River Kayak Tour is suggested as a relaxing outing for visitors and locals of all ages and skill levels.

Meredith Lodging’s Kids Day In May @ Village at Sunriver

The annual Kid’s Day in May event brings a day full of fun and games to The Village at Sunriver. The event will take place on Saturday, May 25 from 11am-4pm.

This fun filled event focuses on kids of all ages and includes numerous games and activities. Visit the petting zoo to get up close with your favorite animal, then jump to your heart’s content on the inflatable bounce houses. Experience the challenge of the Rock Wall or Power Jump; kids can get their face painted or grab some cotton candy. Don’t forget to head over to the fire fighters and police officers to see cool service vehicles and learn about their jobs. Bring the family out for some all-day fun that will be sure to create memories to last a lifetime.

The event is free to attend and the activities are $1 per ticket.

Portions of the proceeds benefit nonprofit organizations in South Deschutes County.

Tumalo Jam @ Cascade Theatrical

Be a part of the very first-ever TUMALO JAM!  Set on private acreage just off Tumalo Road complete with a hayshed stage and plenty of grass for rambling, don’t delay for festivities featuring live bands, dancing, food trucks, drinks, raffle and a theater costume sale.

Raptors of the Desert Sky @ High Desert Museum

The High Desert Museum invites you to “Raptors of the Desert Sky”.  Raptors take flight overhead in this intimate demonstration.  Experience these powerful predators up close as wildlife specialists showcase the birds’ agility and grace.  This program is a highlight of the Museum’s summer experience.  Hawks, owls, falcons and turkey vultures soar from perch to perch directly over the crowd seated in a natural amphitheater nestled in the Museum’s pine forest.  A Museum expert narrates the action and shares about the hunting strategies and natural behaviors of these spectacular birds of prey.

SMaSH Fest @ McMenamins

SMaSH Fest returns to O’Kanes Square at McMenamins on May 15th.  In addition to unique beer creations from more than a dozen CO Breweries, there will be great music by Chiringa and the Jess Ryan Band.  SMaSH is an acronym for “Single Malt and Single Hop”. Why SMaSH? The idea is to break brewing down to its basic elements and emphasize the flavor of a single malt and single hop variety. SMaSH emphasizes the flavor of a single malt and a single hop, letting both the brewer and you understand what each bring to the beer.

Sisters Stampede XC Mountain Bike Race @ Three Creeks Brewing

The Sisters Stampede is a XC mountain bike race occurring each memorial weekend on Sunday.  This thrilling race course features stunning views of the Three Sisters Mountains, and rolling singletrack scattered with Central Oregon lava rock. The course is mainly singletrack which will test riders’ strength and stamina.  There are 25 different race categories.

A very unique start/finish will be located just steps away from Three Creeks Brewing, which will be launching Stampede Ale earlier in the season for the event and will host the after-race party. Five Pine Lodge, which is on the same campus, will provide lodging. Camping is also available in the city park, just blocks from the start/finish line. In addition Blazin Saddles in Sisters will be hosting their annual block party and packet pickup.

Afterward, join the canine festivities at the Village starting at 11am. Central Oregon’s largest annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Deschutes Memorial Gardens on Monday, May 27th at 1:00pm.  The program will be:  “Honoring our men and women in the military and the memory of all our loved ones who have sacrificed their lives for their country”.  Speaker of the day will be Chief Meteorologist, Bob Shaw, and a U.S. Navy Veteran, followed by a program sponsored by VFW Post #1643.

History Pub: Ancient Oregon @ McMenamins

The Old St. Francis History Pub presents:  Ancient Oregon:  Where the Dinosaurs Didn’t Roam”.  If there is one thing on which people of all kinds agree, it’s that dinosaurs are awesome. Unfortunately, Oregon doesn’t have any! Even so, the Beaver State makes up for its lack of T. rex with a fascinating and extensive fossil record. Join us for a tour through our state’s literally explosive prehistory, from its start in the Blue Mountains to the end of the Ice Age in your own backyard.  This program features:  Leonard Finkelman, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Linfield College and graduate student in paleontology at the University of Oregon
