A Must See — Sunriver Observatory and Nature Center

Planning a trip to Sunriver? You’ll want to include one of Central Oregon’s “must see” attractions on your visit — the Sunriver Observatory and Nature Center. This private, not-for-profit scientific and educational organization features an interactive nature center, large scale hands-on public observatory, interpretive exhibits, live birds of prey and snakes, meteorite exhibit, science classes for both kids and adults, special programs, botanical garden, and a nature trail and astronomy store featuring a complete line of telescopes.

Oregon Observatory at Sunriver

Unlike Planetariums, when the roof dramatically disappears at the Oregon Observatory you’ll see the real sky. You’ll be able to witness faraway galaxies, a meteor shower, and globular clusters in the night sky. And you won’t have to line up for a quick peek, because you’ll have access to one of the many telescopes at the Observatory, which actually has the the largest collection of telescopes available for public viewing in the entire country.

Also, thanks to Sunriver’s elevation, uber-dark surroundings, and crystal clear air you’ll be treated to the perfect environment for stargazing. There is nightly viewing in the summer, with guided constellation tours and expert guidance. And there is free solar viewing every day during the summer, and on Saturdays in the fall and spring, when you will be able to view the sun through filtered telescopes to get an incredible, safe view. Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or a first time visitor, you’re bound to be awestruck by the views.

The Nature Center

Telling kids about nature is great, but letting them experience it first hand is infinitely better. At the Sunriver Nature Center children can prowl through the woods to track a porcupine, or touch a lizard or get up close and personal with an owl. There are numerous activities, programs and exhibits to keep them engaged in the natural word. And there is also a staff of naturalists on hand to guide them and answer their questions. Outside the center is a botanical garden where you can sit on a bench and take in the serene view. Numerous birds and squirrels inhabit the terrain, as well as many other elements of Oregon’s natural environment.

The Sunriver Observatory and Nature Center is open Thursday through Saturday, from 10am to 4pm from September through May, with special Winter Observatory hours and events seasonally.

Winter Sunriver Fun for Non-Skiers

Many people think fun in Sunriver is all about the swimming, and the golfing and the hiking. And it is. But there is a whole other side to Sunriver — the side that turns into a snowy winter wonderland come November or December. But what is there to do in Sunriver when the temperatures drop?

For the skiing crowd there is, of course, Mt. Bachelor, which has more than 71 trails and 3500 acres to accommodate them. If you’re not a skier, though, are you left to twiddle your thumbs in your vacation home? Below are some activities that just might be to your liking during your winter stay.

Shopping

If hitting the mall is more your style than hitting the slopes the boutique stores at The Village at Sunriver are just the ticket. You’ll find plenty of Sunriver branded souvenirs and apparel, as well as high performance sporting gear and equipment. You’ll also find fine art, great restaurants, and family entertainment and events, as well as ice skating.

Sledding

Sledding is great fun for the whole family, and Wanoga Sno-Park off Century Drive on the way to Mt. Bachelor is the place to do it. You can sled, toboggan or inner tube, and there’s even a snack trailer in the parking lot to grab a warm beverage. Just up the road at Mt. Bachelor’s Snowblast Tubing Park, you can get a day-pass for an afternoon of inner tubing. And if you’d rather just stay in Sunriver, there’s a snow-tubing hill at SHARC.

Snowshoeing

Mt. Bachelor offers free 90 minute snowshoeing interpretive tours conducted by US Forest Service naturalists from December 19, 2016 through March 31, 2017. You’ll learn about winter ecology at Mt Bachelor and the geology, plants and animals of Central Oregon. The tours are at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on weekends, holidays (except Christmas and New Year’s Day) and school vacations. No reservations are necessary, but you should check-in 10-15 minutes prior to the tour at the USFS snowshoe hut just outside the Guest Services building in West Village.

You can also experience winter off the beaten track with a snowshoe tour from Wanderlust Tours. The tours are led by professional naturalist guides who deliver exciting interpretation and there’s snow play for all ages. Snowshoes are included, but you should wear winter boots and powder/ski pants to keep your feet and legs dry. Boot and pant rentals are available through Wanderlust. Daily tours as well as Moonlight and Starlight tours provide truly memorable experiences.

Snowmobiling

Only 20 minutes from Sunriver are the Wanoga and Dutchman Flat sno parks. These two parks feature some of the best snowmobiling in Central Oregon and are favorite destinations for locals.

Oregon Observatory

If you want a view of the stars without having to wear snowshoes, head to the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver. Plan on spending a fun, educational evening viewing the starry night skies. Sunriver’s elevation, pitch-dark backdrop and clear air make it ideal for stargazing. It just so happens to be the the largest public access viewing facility in the country, too, and a spectacle you won’t want to miss.

The Sunriver Nature Center

You won’t want to miss the Sunriver Nature Center during your stay. This non-profit educational center offers a variety of activities to choose from, including programs and exhibits about the natural surrounding area. The center is close to the Sunriver marina and airport and has a nature trail that staff use to educate visitors.
So there you have it. Turns out there’s plenty to do in Sunriver in the winter months, even if you don’t ski. Of course, if you truly are more of an observer than a participant when the snow arrives, there’s nothing quite so perfect as spending a cozy afternoon in your vacation home, gazing out at the wintery landscape with a cup of hot cocoa in hand.

Contact Village Properties at Sunriver today and we’ll help you find the ideal vacation home to do that cocoa sipping.

Get Your Christmas Tree Permit at Village Properties at Sunriver

It’s time again to deck the halls and trim the tree. For many of us here in Central Oregon, that means it’s time to head into the woods and find that perfect Christmas tree.

But did you know that you’ll need a permit to cut and take that tree home with you? Christmas tree permits are required for each tree, with five Christmas tree permits maximum, per household. There are a few places in Deschutes County where tree permits can be found, and we’re happy to be one of them.

Christmas tree permits can be purchased at Village Properties at Sunriver.

Permits cost $5 each, and can be purchased from Village Properties during business hours. Our offices are located in the Sunriver Business Park at 56835 Venture Lane, Suite 109. You can also call us at 1-800-SUNRIVER with any questions.

Once you have your Christmas tree permit, here are a few things to note before heading out to find your tree:

  • Permits are good only for trees cut within the Deschutes National Forest.
  • Christmas tree permits should be attached to your tree for the ride back home.
  • Only cut down trees that are less than 12 feet tall. (The most popular varieties include Douglas fir, White fir, Incense Cedar, Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pines.)
  • Only cut down trees that are within 15 feet of another tree.
  • Make sure that the stump you leave behind is less than 12 inches tall.
  • Don’t cut trees that are:
    • located on private property.
    • located within 150 feet of developed areas such as highways, picnic areas, campgrounds, etc.
    • located within 300 feet of bodies of water.
